Dental Anxiety

Dental Anxiety is Not Uncommon

Some studies show that up to 75% of Americans experience some level of dental related fear and 20% avoid dental care because of it. If anxiety is a concern, know that your feelings of comfort and safety at our office are our first priority.

Dental Anxiety vs. Dental Phobia

Dental anxieties and phobias may present themselves in a variety of ways. Dental anxiety can be mild to moderate and consist of a worry or apprehension when thinking about a dental procedure. Dental phobia is a much more intense experience. The patient may feel overwhelmed or have an irrational fear of dental work causing them to possibly avoid the care.

We Can Help!

Regardless of your personal level of anxiety, our office is absolutely committed to making sure that your visit is as comfortable, efficient, and easy as possible.

Here are a few popular methods for easing anxiety in the dental office:

  • Communication:
Informing us about your fears and anxieties helps us to ease them. Often we can eliminate your fear simply by giving you correct or updated information. We will always keep you informed before, during, and after your procedure, making sure that you understand what is going on and why we are doing it.
  • Calming Techniques:
Practicing controlled breathing, or finding a distraction in the room may help.
  • Listening to Music:
With most procedures, we can provide an iPad with headphones, or you are welcome to bring your own music device and headphones. This is a great way to keep calm and pass the time while in the chair.
  • Taking Breaks:
Need to take a short break? Let us know during treatment by signaling with your right hand.
